All Suffolkshots prints are produced with conservation in mind: on acid-free, pH-neutral papers using K3 pigment inks. Prints are made either on Permajet Fine Art papers or Pinnacle equivalent papers, with exceptional colour accuracy and fade resistance (typically 60-80 years). In addition, we exclusively use Fine Art Trade Guild (FATG)-certified conservation-grade mounting materials, including the backing board and hinge materials. The mount board is by Arqadia in luxury 2.5mm thickness. We do not use spray-mount, sellotape, double-sided or masking tape, shellac dry-mounting or any other non-reversible method of fixing.
Prints: The photographs on this site have been shot on 35mm, 2¼“ square, transparencies, and 5” x 4” negatives, as well as, more recently, on digital cameras. As a consequence the size and shape of the picture will vary, eg. an A4 print clearly can’t be filled to the edges of the paper with, say, a square image. Prints are available as open-editions in a variety of sizes from A6 to A2, in a semi-gloss finish. Please note that not all sizes are available for every image: a few pictures, particularly those from earlier source material, do not meet our quality standard for large prints, and will only be available in smaller sizes. Prints will always have a small border around the image to allow for mounting.
Mounts and frames: Our bespoke, hand-cut mounts will surround the print with a border of approx. 1½” for smaller prints and 2½” to 3” on larger prints, with an additional ½” or more on the bottom edge of the mount for ‘weighting’ (without which pictures can look oddly low in the frame). Mounts can only be supplied at time of purchase with a picture. We are now mounting photographs in the deeper 2.5mm conservation board, as this adds a luxurious sense of quality to the work and greatly enhances its visual appeal (see left). The colour of the mountboard we use is a very pale ivory, which matches the warm base tone of the semi-gloss print material that we use. This combination blends well with most interior decors and suits virtually any choice of frame, especially natural or stained wood frames. Wherever possible mounts are designed to fit standard, off-the-shelf frame sizes as a convenience to our customers, the exceptions generally being square pictures that will need bespoke frames. The pictures that you select and purchase from this site are dispatched print-only or mounted, but are not framed as we are not picture framers. Any suggestions of suitable frames on this site are just that, suggestions to help you visualise what the picture may look like in your home or office. Properly cared for, ie. not left permanently in direct strong sunlight or in a wet or ‘chemical’ environment, your favourite prints will look as good when handed down to your grandchildren as they do now.
Borders: Some of our pictures are produced with a printed border included in the picture itself. This can augment the look and style of the photograph, as it emulates the feel of a double-mount but without the added cost. It also provides an ‘edge’ to the picture within the mount window. This is the photographic equivalent of the wash-line that will often be found on classic watercolours, except that on watercolours the wash-line is painted on the mount, not on the picture. On the left are typical examples of these printed borders, with pictures ‘float-mounted’ (ie. away from the mount’s inner edge) on deep mountboard (corner details only).
Despatch: Unmounted prints are sent carefully rolled in tissue and protected by a tough cardboard tube with tight-sealing end caps. Large mounted prints will be shipped sandwiched between stiff expanded polystyrene panels inside a cardboard box. Shipping is by Royal Mail in the UK.
